Mission San Xavier Del Bac

Add to plan Remove from plan

Founded by Spanish Jesuit Priest Eusebio Kino, this historic church remains an active Franciscan mission located in the San Xavier District of the Tohono O'odham Nation. The building of this spectacular example of Mexican Baroque architecture began in 1783 and work continued for 14 years before funds ran out. Often referred to as the “White Dove of the Desert” the building is currently undergoing careful restoration. The site, one of the most photographed locations in Tucson, is considered a “must see” in Southern Arizona. Free, docent led tours are offered Monday through Saturdays: 9:30am–12:30pm. A unique gift shop offers religious as well as Native crafts. Special celebrations are held throughout the year. Please check website for upcoming events and mass schedules.
